On Friday, 26th May, the 3/4 unit hosted our school assembly. The theme for our assembly was National Sorry Day. We reflected on National Sorry Day, its importance to the Indigenous people of Australia and our former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd’s Apology to Indigenous Australians. The students shared prayers and sang “The Aboriginal Lord’s Prayer”. Our assembly concluded with a celebration of learning in the 3/4 unit.

Today the 3/4 unit had Pyjamas and Movie Day. The students decided on this fundraiser as a way to raise money for Caritas. Every student brought a gold coin donation for Project Compassion. We had a colourful display of pjs, onesies and dressing gowns! The students spent the day in their pjs. After lunch, both classes watched the movie “Sing” while they munched on popcorn. Many thanks to Maria, Lucy’s mum, for donating popcorn for the whole class.

Today, the 10th of April, our school celebrated its 90th birthday. The celebrations began in the morning with a liturgy to celebrate our special day. Year 3/4FC helped to decorate the hall by designing candles and birthday banners. Many parents, volunteers and special guests attended the liturgy. We were also lucky to have our new principal, Mr Adrian Grbin, celebrating with us. The liturgy included the presentation of our new canvases displaying our five school values- love, respect, justice, gratitude and excellence. These very creative canvases were designed by Mandy Herbert, Sharon Gulley-Frith and many students from our school. The school choir ended the liturgy by singing “The Prayer”. Our celebration included cutting a very large birthday cake and distributing a piece of cake to every student in the school.
After recess, every teacher was allocated a group of students ranging from Reception to Year7. Each group of students participated in an activity organised by the teacher. Some activities included collage, creating birthday banners, old-fashioned games and designing party hats. The students were also given an ice block as part of our celebration. We all enjoyed celebrating our school’s 90th birthday. It was a great day!

Over the past two Thursdays, 3/4FC has been fortunate to have nine UniSA students from the Magill Campus spend the morning in our classroom, observing and learning about Religion lessons in Year 3/4. First, the students observe a religion lesson in action. Then, they interact with the 3/4 students while they are engaged in their learning task. Finally, as part of the UniSA students’ learning, small groups of children are involved in a lesson presented by the uni. students. It is great to see our future Catholic school teachers in action-and with great enthusiasm!

On Ms Nocka’s last day at St. Joseph’s, the students in 3/4FC made cards to give to her as farewell gifts. Each student wrote about a special memory that they shared with Ms Nocka during the three years she was principal at our school. We thank Ms Nocka for all of the wonderful things she has done for our school over the past three years. We wish her all the best in her new role as principal at St. Mary’s.

Today our school celebrated St. Joseph’s Day. We began our special day by attending Mass with the parish community where we celebrated the life of St. Joseph. After Mass, the whole school walked down to The Gums for recess. The children had a great time playing with their friends. Once we arrived back at school, we continued our celebration with a free sausage sizzle and ice block. We would like to thank all of the volunteers who gave up their time to cook the sausages on such a hot day!

Buddy Class Time – Making “Mini Time Capsules”

Last Thursday, we worked with our buddies to make “mini time capsules”. The 3/4 and R/1 students drew small pictures together. They carefully folded the pictures and placed them inside small plastic containers. The students and their buddies then went into the bottom yard to find a “secret spot” to bury their “mini time capsules”. I wonder if anyone has found any of our “mini time capsules” yet?

After that, the students in 3/4FC took part in an Ash Wednesday spelling activity. Each student worked with a partner. They used the letters in the words “Ash Wednesday” to see how many different words they could make with their partner. Some students made more than forty words!
